TOGETHER FORWARD

Brian Martinez

I’m a junior here at UW-Whitewater and a Political Science Major with a Legal Studies Emphasis. I was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, grew up in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, and graduated from J.I. Case High School. After graduating, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Parkside transferring to UW-Whitewater two years later. I have been able to have a seat at the table and work with state and federal legislators, on behalf of students across our state, to advocate for lower student tuition, and to address the current student debt crisis. On and off of campus, I helped lead several organizations and was able to be one of the youngest leaders in SE Wisconsin. There’s more work to be done. It begins with us here at UW-Whitewater.

I am a sophomore majoring in Political Science with a minor in Communications and Electronic Media. I grew up in Beloit, and graduated from Beloit Memorial high school. I was very fortunate to grow up in Beloit for many reasons. It was the place that I found my love for theatre and music.  Beloit also showed me what it meant to be a leader; that to be a leader requires passion for the community you serve and to be a resource the community can rely on. In Beloit, I embodied those qualities by being junior and senior class secretary, and being a competitor in the Miss America Organization. Now I’m ready to bring those qualities to my new home and family: UW-Whitewater.

About Us
Benefits

CAMPUS SAFETY

• Let’s work with and not against Campus Police to strategically place more emergency blue lights around campus, specifically in the “six-pack.”

• Increase awareness of the CSO escort program and work with them to increase familiarity with the program as well as the student officers.

• We propose better lighting in our parking lots and walkways to ensure better visibility and a safer campus.

• We will work with Campus Police to add more visible security cameras in our parking lots and surrounding areas so that students can feel safer getting around campus. One person feeling unsafe is one too many.

• We vow to increase awareness and support for survivors of sexual assault including transgender, genderqueer, and non-conforming students. Resources for survivors are crucial but prevention is the goal.

• We can combat climate change right here on campus. we will work with student organizations and The Sustainability Council to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint, create less waste, and preserve the nature around us.

• Compost cooking scraps and leftover food from the dining halls.

• Use surplus produce grown on campus in the dining halls  and even allow students to use it as well.

• Replace paper towels on campus with modern hygienic hand dryers.

• Incentivize the use of reusable bottles and mugs to limit waste produced on campus by students.

SUSTAINABILITY

IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS

• With a new chancellor coming to campus this fall, this is a great opportunity to reshape the relationship administrative officials have with students. It’s time for the student voice to have a seat at the table.

• We will work with and not against our campus administrators to negotiate better deals and plans that affect students. Having a seat at the table means we need to address the wishes of the student body and at the same time make sure we’re being responsible with the university budget provided by taxpayers.

• The greater Whitewater community needs to be a university priority. We need to go the extra mile and partner with our community more to better the city we call home.

• We need more outreach for bilingual and international students so that they can feel welcome and at home here at UWW.
